2020 Call for IBS Young Scientist Fellowship

1.       Purpose and Background
With the vision of “Making Discoveries for Humanity and Society,” the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) was founded in 2011 by the Korean government to promote basic sciences in Korea. To date, IBS has thirty Research Centers and each Center has been yielding outstanding results in various research fields.
The IBS Young Scientist Fellowship (YSF) started in 2016 to play an active role in fostering the next-generation’s basic science leaders. We believe this fellowship offers junior scientists opportunities to conduct independent research by utilizing state-of-the-art infrastructure and to grow on the basis of research collaborations with leading researchers.
We hope that the YSF program serves as a stepping stone for our researchers to be appointed as independent principal investigators at prestige institutions around the world.

2.       Eligibility
l  Within 7 years of obtaining a Ph.D. (conferred as of 1 January 2014) or under the age of 40 with a Ph.D. (born no earlier than 1 January 1980)
v Ph.D. candidates must be conferred with a Ph.D. degree before 31 August 2020.
l  Researchers currently participating in IBS Research Centers are eligible to apply, if they meet the above criteria.

The final number of YSF researchers may change depending on the deliberation results of the 2021 IBS budget.

4.       Benefits and Conditions
l  Full-time work and 100% research participation in principle
YSF researchers are not allowed to participate in other research projects (e.g. Sejong Science Fellowship, Young Researcher Program of National Research Foundation, etc.) besides YSF projects; and any mutual selection of other research projects with YSF program may cause the cancellation of YSF projects.
l  Annual budget of KRW 150–300 mil. per year including salary of KRW 60-70 mil. (up to KRW 150 mil. for theoretical fields and up to KRW 300 mil. for experimental fields)
l  Appointment for three years with a possible two-year extension depending on the performance review results
When a current IBS researcher is selected, support will be offered for up to three years (please refer to the FAQ for details).
l  After physically relocated to one of the IBS Centers, YSF researchers will conduct independent research by utilizing research facilities and equipment of the Center (organizing small research group is possible).
l  Selected YSF researchers must commence their research between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021.

European Union will close its borders to all non-essential travel to fight coronavirus

Madrid (ITNTV) The European Union will close its borders to all non-essential travel as it attempts to contain the  ongoing spread of the coronavirus  on the continent. "The less travel, the more we can contain the virus," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Monday following a video conference between G7 leaders. She appeared confident that the European Council would sign off on the restriction in a Tuesday vote. The bloc's member states imposed aggressive measures on Monday,  days after the  World Health Organization (WHO) said Europe was at the epicenter of the pandemic. French President Emmanuel Macron declared "war" on the virus during a national address on Monday, banning all social events across the country -- including family gatherings. Macron said those who have gathered in public places in recent days have not been respecting previous measures to limit the outbreak's spread in France, which as of Monday had 5,380 con...

I, UKJ - Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany Prof. Christian Geis, Section of Translat. Neuroimmunol., Dept. Neurol., UKJ We seek for a productive addition to our research team in a collaborative project. We plan to study pathomechanisms of synaptic changes underlying autoimmune disorders of the central nervous system applying super-resolution microscopy. The Geis lab examines immune-mediated changes of synapses by interactions with pathogenic human antibodies against neuronal proteins. Short- and long-term effects on neuronal networks are analyzed using electrophysiological and various microscopy methods. The Qualmann lab is an internationally well-known lab that focusses on proteins with the power to s...

80 pct of life stopped in Turkey due to outbreak, says interior minister

Turkish citizens, especially those living in metropolises, have been abiding by the “social isolation” principles laid out by the government, Interior Minister  Süleyman Soylu  has said, adding that almost 80 percent of life “stopped” in  Turkey . “Up until now, just our ministry issued 38 circulars, 17 of which concern the borders. Many high-level precautions have been taken. Right now, 80 percent of life stopped in Turkey,” Soylu said on March 26 in an interview with a private broadcaster. Soylu also provided updated figures for passenger traffic. He said that there is a 73 percent decline in inter-city bus services, adding that these services can also be suspended if needed. On intra-city traffic, Soylu said that there has been an 80 percent decline. This figure was 65 percent according to another interview the minister held on March 25. The government has four cruxes it predicates on when taking measures against the spread of the novel  coronaviru...
